[TEST] Gotham Knights on PS5

I’m back here to share my opinion on a brand new title! We haven’t heard from Gotham since 2015 with the release of Arkham Knight immersing ourselves in the world of the Dark Knight. This time, Batman’s apprentices: Batgirl, Robin, Red Hood and Nightwing are taking over. But does the caliphate really exist?

Gotham Knights is an action-adventure game, developed by the teams at Warner Bros Game Montreal. The game was released on October 21, 2022 and is available on PS5 and Xbox Series. As mentioned, the title puts us in the shoes of Batman’s companions across Gotham. Let’s discover the Batman family!

I don’t know where to start but just the fact of being able to dive back into the Batman universe, I have to admit is always a pleasure. Before proceeding with the testing, I would like to point out that I received a copy of the game prior to release (thanks again Warner Bros Games France!) Unfortunately I was not able to test the co-op mode.

Without too much spoiler, it has to be said that the presentation of the game is incredible! Worthy of a DC movie, it sets the stage and quickly puts us in the mood. As we know, the scenario arose with Batman dead and a city left in the hands of some well-known villains like Harley Quinn, Mr. Freeze, or the Penguin.

The game is very interesting because it allows us to change characters regularly and thus have a slightly varied gameplay. We can also add to this the customization of heroes in terms of costumes, skill trees, weapons, etc.

In terms of graphics, the game is very beautiful. City does a really good job and really quickly immerses us in Gotham City. On the other hand, for a PS5 game, I wanted it to be more lively with more people. The characters are very well designed which makes the game really pleasing to the eye.

In terms of gameplay, I found some good and some less so. First, the Batcycle bike, which I didn’t appreciate in the feel of riding it. We have the feeling that we are floating above the road, and the collisions with other vehicles are so lacking in realism, it’s a bit significant. Action-wise, the grappling hook is very useful but it immediately brought me back to PlayStation’s latest Spider-Man game. It’s not annoying, but it makes us lose flavor of the moves of some acrobats like Robin or Nightwing.

On the other hand, the combat stages are really successful! Both simple and technical, I really enjoyed testing the different fighting styles of the four heroes! There is a challenge to face several types of enemies at the same time, which makes these combat stages very nervous. For my part, the 30fps that early gamers mentioned so much didn’t bother me at all.

To qualify, I found that some moves or certain stages of cutscenes were a little dated for a game at the end of 2022.

I liked I at least like
  • the introduction
  • Choose and customize heroes
  • stages of combat
  • Gotham City
  • baticle
  • Abundance
  • Side of the “Spider-Man version”

8.0

Despite its few flaws, diving back into the world of DC Comics and the Batman universe is really fun. The different gameplays of our four new heroes bring more liveliness and, behind that, a good rendezvous scenario!
